Holidays and other time off
Everyone who works full time for the council gets at least 22 days off, although you can ‘buy’ more time off if you want.
You can also take time off for compassionate reasons or if you’re a carer.
How annual leave works
The amount of days’ holiday you’re entitled to per year depends on how long you’ve worked here, your terms and conditions, what pay range you’re on, as well as whether you’re full or part time.
Compassionate leave
You may need to be away from work because of problems at home or in your family. You’ll need to speak to your manager before taking time off.
Carers’ leave
If you’re a carer and there’s an emergency, you can take time off to deal with it. How much leave you can take, and whether this is paid or unpaid, will depend on your terms and conditions.
Taking a sabbatical
If you’ve been working here (or in local government) for at least two years, you may be able to take up to a year off unpaid to pursue your own interests.
Volunteer leave
You can take up to 3 days per year (pro rata'd for part time staff) as paid volunteering leave. If you would like to take volunteering leave, please speak to your manager. Volunteer leave can be booked on SAP using the drop down box to select 'Volunteering' as the leave type. Jury leave
If you have received summons to complete jury service, you will need to request Jury Service leave via SAP.To make the request, go to the SAP Launchpad - SAP Employee Self Service (ESS) and choose ‘Leave’ - ‘Jury Service’. Your line manager will need to approve the leave in the same way that they do annual leave.
Whilst on Jury Service you will get your normal pay for the duration of your leave. As there is no loss of earnings, you do not need to complete the ‘Certificate of Loss of Earnings’ which you will receive. You can still claim some expenses from the court, for example for travel, if applicable.
Please note, jury service requests for casual staff members would need to be reviewed on a case by case basis so please talk to your line manager in the first instance.
